There is a quietness to this piece that draws you in slowly. At first glance, a whitewashed timber panel. Then, the closer you look, the more it reveals — a dense, meditative mandala of hand-carved spirals radiating outward from a central medallion, framed by concentric borders of diamond lattice, Greek key, and serpentine scroll work, each motif carved by hand in Bali with a patience that no machine can replicate.
The carving language speaks to something older than the island where it was made. The spiral forms and geometric border patterning are consistent with the visual tradition of Toraja panels from the highlands of Sulawesi — a culture in which carved motifs were never merely decorative, but carried meaning: status, ancestry, the relationship between the living and the spirit world. Here, those motifs have been interpreted through Balinese hands into a piece that feels entirely at home in a contemporary interior.
The whitewash finish is deliberate and beautifully judged. It softens the raw timber beneath without concealing it, allowing the carved relief to catch and hold light across the day — shadows shifting as the sun moves, the panel never looking quite the same twice.
At 90 x 90cm, it is a square of considered presence. Hang it alone on a dark wall and let it do the work.
Handcrafted. One of a kind. Made to outlast the room it lives in.
As this item is handmade, slight imperfections are part of the design and are not considered a fault.
